When connecting the PTO from the tractor to the chaser bin, the PTO shaft may need to be cut to ensure it is the correct length. If the shaft is too long, it can bottom out causing damage telescopic sections and connecting components. If it is too short, it may disengage when the tractor moves through peaks and troughs.
If using different towing tractors, a new PTO shaft will need to be sourced and cut to fit that specific tractor.
Minimum recommended shaft telescopic length is 250-300mm.
Caution: If the PTO shaft is too long, the bearings and mountings will interfere when traveling over undulating country.
Warning: If the PTO shaft is too short, it may disengage and injure people and/or damage equipment.
PTO Shaft Length Cutting Procedure:
1. Use the formula ‘X = Z-Y’ to find the PTO cutting length, where:
X = PTO cut length
Y = 650 mm for 25T, 30T, 35T chaser bin
= 1050 mm for 45T chaser bin
Z = Distance between tractor’s PTO and the chaser bin PTO
2. Measure the distance ‘Z’:
Measure from the tractor’s PTO shaft to the chaser bin PTO shaft as shown in image below.

3. Find ‘X’:
Example: 35T bin (Y = 650mm) with measured “Z” distance = 1156 mm
PTO cut length (X) = Measured distance (Z) – Chaser Bin Factor (Y)’
PTO cut length “X” = 1156-650 = 506 mm
4. Refer to the PTO Shaft Cutting Table:
Using the measurement obtained, refer to the ‘PTO Shaft Cutting Table’ on Page 20.
Select the PTO cut length “X” measurement use the corresponding numbers to work out the individual shaft length for your inner and outer shafts.

5. Disassemble the PTO Shaft:
The Tractor PTO is telescopic and consists of Outer (A) and Inner (B) components.
Simply slide the two components apart for disassembly.

6. Remove the covers (inner and Outer shafts.
Remove the cover by pushing the red tags in off the clips (2 locations) and slide it down the shaft to revealing the PTO shaft.

7. Mark and cut PTO Shafts:
Measure the shafts as shown in the diagram below from the base of the uni-joint and mark the cut length based on the selected sizes from the chart.
From previous example: PTO cut length “X” = 506mm therefore,
Outer Shaft = 580mm and Inner Shaft = 595mm
Cut the shaft at the marked point.
Take note of the measurement “X”.

8. Mark and cut the PTO cover:
Cut the same length off the cover that was cut from the shafts for both inner and outer covers.
From the measured “X”, mark a line on the cover as shown in the diagram below.
Cut the PTO at marked line.

9. Assemble the covers on the PTO shafts:
Ensure that the distance between the end of the cover and the end shaft is approximately 30mm after reassembly.

10. Re-assemble the PTO shaft:
Slide the inner and outer shafts together.
